Grassy Narrows Living History Forum (Canadian Society for the History of Medicine)

May 22, 2026 / online

The forum is taking place on Friday, May 22 from 3:30 to 4:30 PM (EDT) at CSHM’s virtual conference. It will explore the decades-long suffering of the Asubpeeschoseewagong First Nation from the loss of health due to mercury contamination in the English-Wabigoon river system. The event will feature Judy Da Silva, a Grassy Narrows community member and advocate, and Donna Mergler, a Professor and Canadian environmental health researcher whose work has demonstrated the severe health impacts of high mercury exposure within this community. Chantelle Richmond, an Anishinaabe scholar and Professor who holds the Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Health and the Environment, will also be providing a reflection at the conference.
