Assistant Professor, Media, Culture, and Communication, New York University

Position Description:

New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development invites applications for an entry-level tenure track Assistant Professor position to begin on September 1, 2025. The appointed faculty will be a member of the Department of Media, Culture and Communication (MCC). MCC specializes in the study of media —broadly speaking—in its cultural, historical, technological and global contexts. We are an interdisciplinary faculty trained across the humanities and social sciences. Candidates should demonstrate clear research specialization(s) and teaching range, while also speaking to the field of media and cultural studies more generally.

We seek applicants working in studies of Indigenous media and culture broadly defined – whose research and teaching draws on Indigenous theories and practices of knowledge production, meaning-making, methodologies and critique. We are interested in perspectives that complement current faculty in MCC working on colonial, anti-colonial, decolonial movements, capitalist extractivism and environmental justice, Black studies, racial justice, visual culture, critical legal studies, critical digital studies, critical disability studies, queer and trans studies and other initiatives focusing on de-centering normative perspectives. While we welcome global perspectives in Indigenous studies, we especially encourage candidates whose work engages Indigenous communities in the Americas to apply.

Application review will begin on December 10 and will continue until the position is filled.
