THE ELEVENTH INTERNATIONAL TARTU CONFERENCE
ON CANADIAN STUDIES
“WATER”
11-12 October 2025, at the University of Tartu, Estonia
Water is a central notion that unites the diverse ways of looking at Canada to deal with its cultural, social, environmental, historical, political, geographic, and economic issues.
With this conference, we seek to explore water from multiple inter/disciplinary and theoretical perspectives of the humanities, as well as natural and social sciences.
While addressing the conference theme, the contexts of the issues in the papers may be current or historical or combine both. We welcome case studies and theoretical papers as well as comparative analyses of Canada and other countries.
The topics of the contributions may include but are not limited to:
images and symbols of water (in literature and other art forms)
water in mythology and religion
water and place names; water and identity
water forms; water and life forms
water bodies; water and landscapes
waterways; water, exploration, and colonialism
water and migration (of people, cultures, traditions), diaspora and multiculturalism
water re/sources and environment
water and geo/politics
Aboriginal Studies, Quebec Studies and Canadian Studies
Canada and the Baltics, Baltic diasporas in Canada
concepts, theories, and research methodologies to deal with the topics.
The working language of the conference is English; however, presentations can be made either in English or French. The length of the presentations is 20 minutes plus 10 minutes for discussion.
Contributors are expected to submit an abstract of 250 words as well as a biographical note of 100 words (including title and institutional affiliation) by September 10, 2025.
