THE MONUMENT IN AN AGE OF METACRISIS
Amid the contemporary crisis of neoliberalism and rapidly shifting cultural values, how might monuments transcend their traditional roles as static symbols of authority in shaping collective memory and national identity to be reimagined as dynamic sites of engagement that can provide a response to the complexities and challenges of today’s socio-cultural, ecological, and digital crises? We encourage papers that examine the intersections of physical and decentralized, network-born monuments, the implications of private ownership and commodification, and the role of creative regeneration in transforming neglected artifacts into expressions of public interest. Topics may include the monument as a site of protest and renewal, challenging the legacies of colonialism, racism, and totalitarianism, the significance of digital ruins and the aesthetic potential of digital artifacts. How can monuments evolve beyond enduring materials and fixed ideologies to embrace vibrant, participatory forms, emergent practices and the repurposing of both urban landscapes and digital spaces?
