2023 Robarts Centre Graduate Student Conference CFP (Submission Deadline: February 1, 2023)

CALL FOR PROPOSALS

Submissions Deadline: Wednesday, 1 February 2023

How Canada is promoted and contested stands firmly on the ways in which individual and collective memory is manifested, activated, narrated, and mobilized from different perspectives. Its study is fraught with distinct understandings of how to define the origins and development of Canadian society, including competing identity claims, exclusionary historical scripts, and the negative logic of nation-building. Researchers examining Canada get caught up in deciphering memory and its role in shaping the understanding of contemporary Canadian society.

The 2023 Robarts Centre Graduate Conference will highlight and confront how memory and identity are at the centre of the study of Canada, past, present, and future. We ask: How have Canadian imaginaries and common senses been shaped by memory and identity claims? What can these claims tell us about Canadian society? Do mobilizing these memories support the status quo or transformative change? How can memory and identity claims enact change?

Graduate students are invited to submit proposals for presentations that fit one of the following panel topics:

Nation-building & the Canadian “space”
Extraction, the environment & the climate emergency
Indigenous sovereignties, histories & futurities
Racism, multiculturalism & diversity
Regional, provincial & city exceptionalisms
Literary, arts-based & visual expressions & contestations
We encourage students from a wide variety of disciplines to interpret these topics from their perspective.

Applicants will be notified by 1 March 2023 of their acceptance status and applicants may be offered an opportunity to publish their papers in the Robarts Centre for Canadian Studies’ online publication Canada Watch.
