POSTDOCTORAL POSITION IN ENERGY, CLIMATE CHANGE AND SOCIETY


The Urban Environment Observatory (https://cms.eas.ualberta.ca/UrbanEnvOb/) is a research group that is
engaged in a variety of national and international research works ranging from human rights, multiculturalism,
land use planning (for instance, annexations and urban sprawl), housing, and planning in Canada's North and in
countries such as Sri Lanka, India and the United Arab Emirates. Dr. Sandeep Agrawal, Professor, and Director
of the School of Urban and Regional Planning, is the head of the Observatory. The group currently consists of
one postdoctoral fellow, four PhD students along with several graduate and undergraduate students from a
variety of disciplines.
Exploring the nexus of energy and society from the urban planning perspective is a recent, emerging research
program. This program aims to document the existing capacity and best practices for the integration of future
energy systems into Canadian communities, develop GHG emission models at the neighbourhood level and
explore how energy costs affect housing and homelessness in Indigenous communities in Canada’s North. The
Postdoctoral position available in the Observatory is for one year with a possibility of renewals for up to four
years.
The candidate is expected to have:
o A PhD (or defending soon) in Urban and Regional Planning, Geography or a closely related field
o Evidence of publication in peer-reviewed journal(s)
o Knowledge and understanding of climate change modelling, municipal regulations and provincial legislation
o Knowledge and understanding of a variety of research methods including statistical methods and remote
sensing.
o Experience in working with indigenous communities.
o Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, prioritize, adapt to rapidly shifting priorities and manage
research projects from start to publication
o Excellent written, communication, and interpersonal skills for effective and efficient development of peerreviewed publications and interactions with other researchers and the public.
